Somehow, someway, it is that time of year again – the holidays are officially upon us! Overlook Auxiliary’s NP Twig 10 is extremely excited to be able to kick off the holidays once again with our traditional annual Thanksgiving Basket food drive and fundraiser. Last year, the pandemic took away our ability to provide meals directly to families in need, but we have been given the opportunity to once again create holiday memories and a sense of much needed relief and support to so many mothers in our area.
As you may recall, our Thanksgiving Basket campaign benefits patients of Overlook Medical Center’s HealthStart Clinic, a wonderful organization that provides obstetric and pediatric care, free of charge, to over 800 underprivileged families in Essex, Morris and Union Counties. Prior to the pandemic, we were able to feed 112 families – women and children who are food and financially insecure. Many of these women are forced to make the choice between keeping their electricity on or providing nourishing food to their children, let alone celebrate a holiday that to all of us is not even a question.
We plan to decrease the cost of our Thanksgiving baskets from $50 to $25, as we will rely primarily on donated goods. If you would like to donate non-perishable goods, please see the link below for our basket “wish list.” Recipients will receive a basket full of all of the Thanksgiving trimmings necessary to enjoy the holiday as well as a $25 gift card to cover the cost of a fresh turkey as well as any other items they may need to sustain their family for a warm weekend. In total, each family will receive: A gift card, stuffing, macaroni and cheese, assorted vegetables, gravy, potatoes, candy, cookies, juice boxes, festive holiday napkins and oatmeal for a hearty breakfast the following morning.
The appreciation from each family who receives a basket each year is immeasurable. Several mothers in the past have noted that they and their children were able to taste turkey for the first time, as they could never afford to celebrate the holiday properly. Others are just simply grateful to not have to think about where a few days worth of meals will come from. Your generous gift touches lives more than we may be able to put into words.
Please note that there are a couple of ways to give this holiday season.
First, by donating the amount of your choice to feed as many families as you would like to via the link here (https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=MW5L4Q8DBWYVQ). We ask that donations be sent in by November 12. Monetary donations will be used to purchase gift cards for the Thanksgiving Baskets and provide continued support of the HealthStart Clinic.
Second, by donating any amount of non-perishable goods that fit you or your group’s capability. Please see our Amazon wishlist here (https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/11IJVKHJ0JTPQ?ref_=wl_share).
We thank you in advance for your help and generosity and we can guarantee, from our own experience, that your Thanksgiving dinner will taste even better knowing that you helped hundreds enjoy a holiday that without you, they would likely go without.
All the best for a wonderful holiday season,
Erin Donadio and NP Twig 10
